Zulu Compilation, 1984
Zulu Compilation, 1984
Well here it is, the UK post-punk compilation my friend was nice enough to rip and send. If anyone else wants to rip and send me stuff or just make suggestions, please feel free. It's wonderful to have someone else do the ripping for once! ;)
I had never heard of this compilation before, or even the label Zulu. I'm also not familiar with any of the bands here, except that this contains an early track by Frankie Goes To Hollywood (when they were just called Frankie) and apparently The Project is Mike Keane of Factory Records act The Royal Family & The Poor. I'm also familiar with Pink Industry, but that's about it. Apparently, Forget The Whimpering Child and Become The Warrior opened up for Echo & The Bunnymen in the early 80's, and I quite like their track here.
Full tracklisting here:
Urban Jazz Ritual - Car Crazy
Frankie - Love Has Got A Gun
The Project - Leaves In The Wind
Bart - Situation
Levi Tafari - Liverpool Experience
Ambrose Reynolds - Lee Harvey Oswald (pt 2)
Shiny Two Shiny - Moment To Moment
Benjamin Zephania - The Boat Is Sinking
Pink Industry - Stand Alone
Mark Davies Markham - It All Sounds The Same To Me
Forget The Whimpering Child and Become The Warrior - Left You Lying
Philip Renshaw - Lake Victoria
Wrecked Career - Screaming Drowning
S.T.F.O.T.P.A. - The Kremlin In Flame

Glad you're enjoying it. An obscure collection with some hidden gems that would be completely forgotten if not for the Frankie track.
One oddity is Ambrose Reynold's "LHO (pt2)" which is so similar in style and theme to Steinski's "The Motorcade Sped On" that I can't believe it's coincidental. This collection was recorded from 82 to 84 and finally released in 84, the same year as TMSO. It's possible Steinski heard it and made his (improved) version. Just speculating.
class act so far! love this pre dub step!
also the shiny two shiny lp on red flame is pretty good. maybe i'll get around to ripping it when i get my gear together
Yeah I guess you could say that stuff was "pre-dub step" couldn't you? I was rather intrigued by that side of the comp, without being able to think of what kind of music to call it...Jamaican accent vocals that wasn't reggae...
My buddy has the Shiny Two Shiny LP as well. He was gonna rip it but I'm not all that crazy about them, I'm afraid.
Just checked out your own blog, looks neato! Thanks for commenting.
Thank you for this excellent comp! I just discovered your blog and am heart-broken that all the Z-Share files are lost in some sort of cyclic twilight zone.
I know! I have tried to downlaod from ZShare myself without success twice in the last 24 hours! What I can I do to help you? Man, I'm so sorry. If people just write me an email and tell me what they want, then I can make good. I'm really sorry.
Bimle, this stuff is nothing but amazing. Very high-quality new wave that would have been a shame to forget (is that correct English?) I especially enjoy Wrecked Career. Can't thank you and your friend enough! What else has he got? :)
About the Shiny Two Shiny album: Would love to hear that!!
About zShare: I had the impression that *sometimes* it worked, when I did not just click on the download link as usual, but to alt-click (on the Mac). So with Windows you could try to right-click and "save as" to not end up in the twilight zone. Just *maybe* it helps.
Hi oldskool, thanks for commenting. I'm trying to see if my buddy will rip the Shiny Two Shiny LP.
Zshare - I dunno. I'm not gonna use them anymore for this blog, that's for sure. Unfortunately, when my hard drive crashed recently, I lost the rips I made of things so it is not so easy for me to just go about replacing all these links, but like I said, people are welcome to email me if they're looking for something in particular.
Stay tuned!
Thanks for sharing! I was looking for Zephanaia's 'The Boat...' and now I have this to explore. Respect. Leapnik ;-)
