Here's a list of my fave bands/artists of all time

1. Joy Division/New Order (or vice versa)
2. Dif Juz
3. Crispy Ambulance
4. Kate Bush/Nick Drake (or vice versa)

Then there are some things which are my ultimate faves by artists who only hit a short stride of brilliance in their careers:

David Sylvian - First three solo albums inc. Blue Of Noon b-side
Simple Minds - Sparkle In The Rain and A Brass Band In African Chimes
Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
U2 - Unforgettable Fire era plus Joshua Tree b-sides and some early stuff too
Ride - Today Forever EP, Grasshopper, Leave Them All Behind and Seagull (live versions)

That's a good summary of my fave music ever. But then I'm leaving off a whole lot of Martin Hannett stuff, so...sigh.

Well, at least I feel more prepared for a trip to a desert island now.

Interesting...I started out with that "late" era Simple Minds too but as the years go by, it's the early stuff through New Gold Dream that keeps me coming back. Maybe I need to go back and try the Sparkle era again...

Yeah I almost anticipated someone bringing up earlier Simple Minds when I posted that! :) Certainly New Gold Dream/Sister Feelings Call/Sons & Fascination are all classics in their own right. But Sparkle era stuff made a much deeper and lasting impression on my psyche. Incidentally someone just sent me some demos from the Sparkle album which are all instrumentals and without Lillywhite's production and they are often danceable and Kraftwerky if you can believe that! They even use a wah-wah pedal on one track. Really cool stuff but I guess I'd be a fool to post it here.

Dif Juz, Yes! I was always dissapointed with the Extractions though, it sounds really muddy. Have you heard the 'Time Clock Turn Back' cassette? Any ideas where to get a copy/ is it blogged anywhere????

Thanks for your comment! I don't know if Time Clock Turns Back is blogged anywhere but that might be something I should consider putting up here. I never liked it as much as their other material, though, I admit. Is Extractions muddy? I can't say I agree with you there. It's just Guthrie's production style...you may as well say Felt's Primitive Painters is muddy!
